"That's so gay." You have probably read that comment a million times on YouTube, referring to something that is stupid or lame. You have probably even heard similar statements at bars around Metro Manila such as "usapang lalake (a manly agreement)," which connotes that women and gays do not keep their promises or agreements, or "bakla ka yata eh (you're probably gay)" when a man refuses to drink a mug of beer. You also may have watched that local beer commercial that shows a difference between "real men" and the so-called "fake men." For many, referring to gay people as inferior, lame, unmanly-like, and stupid may mean nothing. "It's just a word," they say. "Why would you be offended?" The problem, however, is yes. WE ARE OFFENDED. Being verbally harassed because of our sexual orientation creates an atmosphere where gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender feel disrespected, unwanted, and unsafe. ...

" RuPaul's Drag Race ," the search for the "next superstar drag queen," premiered its first episode on Logo last February 2. And boy, are we in for a ride! Hosted and produced by legendary drag queen RuPaul, this reality show is a combination of America's Next Top Model, Project Runway, and a little bit of American Idol on the side. The winner, who will earn the title "America's Next Breakthrough Drag Superstar," has to outmodel, outdesign, and outperform all of her competitors. In the first challenge, the queens were given a limited budget and created a drag outfit using the items sold at a 99-cent store. The bottom two queens were then pitted against each other at a free-for-all lip-sync showdown. This show is indeed a celebration of the beauty and grace exemplified by these lovely queens. (And I hope it will be shown in the Philippines.)

Reparative therapy, a so-called "healing process" for gays to become straight, has always been a controversial subject matter in the gay community. Although mainstream psychiatrists have yet to determine what causes one's sexual orientation to deviate, proponents of reparative therapy believe that homosexuality is caused by a traumatic experience as a child. However, we can say that this therapy is not (as they may say) "a blanket solution to cure homosexuality." For one, as many of us believe, homosexuality is not a disease nor it is a mental condition. However, there could be some cases where men took the gay route to "escape" from their trauma, which mentoring treatments like reparative treatment may help. Unlike in the United States where many reparative treatments focus on the psychological aspect, the Philippines has its own way of reparative treatment although it is not promoted as such. LOS ANGELES The Screen Actors Guild officially stands opposed to the California ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage. After weeks of being criticized for not contributing enough to defeat Proposition 8, members of the film-TV industries have recently stepped up their contributions financial and otherwise to fight Proposition 8, and on Tuesday a union committee voted to oppose the measure. "No actor should have to disclose his or her sexual preference in order to get health and retirement benefits," said SAG Chairwoman Anne-Marie Johnson. "Being legally married means everyone is treated the same. It's important that we take a stand to protect all actors from discriminatory hiring practices and provide same-sex couples access to benefits."
