Book Review: Selling Out, The Gay and Lesbian Movement Goes to the Market

Book Review on Canadian English Professor Michael Cobb's book "God Hates Fags". This post was written by RBP team member line of flight from Sampaloc Toc . Happy Labor Day! Alexandra Chasin is an American professor of literature and LGBT studies. Chasin's book is a fascinating and damning account of how market forces have fundamentally altered (and destroyed in some ways) the revolutionary potential of LGBT movements. From the beginning (if there ever was one), LGBT movements have called for a fundamental rethinking of gender, family, and eros. In the U.S., until the 1990s, these movements were local and fragmented in nature, goals were similar but local LGBT groups dealt with local communities to tackle problems of discrimination, etc.,. Local bars funded local LGBT publications. As noted in Fetner's How the Religious Right Shaped Lesbian and Gay Activism , the direction of these movements in the U.S. became unified and nationalized in the 1980s. Fetner describe...

A call for change

Below is the statement of the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines (STRAP) on what happened recently to BB Gandanghari and her friends at a bar in Pasig City. It seems both ironic and fitting in the face of the global LGBT community preparing to commemorate this year (May 17, 2009) the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) with a spotlight on transphobia. What happened to BB and her friends stands proof that transphobia exists and is alive everywhere in the world. A CALL FOR CHANGE Statement of the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines (STRAP) on the Aruba incident involving Binibini Gandanghari and her friends We, the members of the Society of Transsexual Women of the Philippines (STRAP) are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred on the night of April 23, 2009, Thursday, to Binibini (BB for short) Gandanghari and her friends at Aruba Bar and Restaurant in Metrowalk, Pasig City. On that said night, Aruba, with no compunction and invoking its NO CROS...

MISS USA: Gay Marriage Scandal

Ay, gusto ko lang mag follow-up regarding about the MUSAP because I've read another article today and it really offended me talaga! On my last post , wala akong kinakampihan between Ms Carolina nor Perez, but this time gusto ko lang mag express kung ano din ang opinion ko. Anyway, this is also a reply to Mac Calister and Shanes comment.. Mac, hindi mo to ma-take ..lol “I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other,” Prejean responded. “But in my country, and in my family, I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.” Eh, ano ngayon if you were raised that way? To hell I care! People were raised to hate Blacks and Jews, Asians too. Does that make it right? But that’s not really what she meant, of course: “I don’t take back what I said,” she told Lauer of AccessHollywood, adding that she “had spoken from my heart, from my beliefs and for my God.” “It’s not about be...

Swine Flu: CREEPY!

Here's to the latest health news: SWINE FLU has started to infest the USA. It started in Mexico, killing more or less a hundred people. Exhibiting symptoms of traditional flu infection, SWINE FLU has NO VACCINATION and is AIRBORNE (so a simple sneeze from an infected person can kill you). It is not transmitted through eating pork but by contact, e.g., shaking of hands, kissing, and touching virus-infected objects and consequently touching the nose, eyes, mouth, etc. So ALCOHOL OR HAND SANITIZER is a must. Authorities at NAIA have ordered the screening of all passengers arriving from the United States. The outbreak is not in the country yet, but we better be careful as early as this time. Which means...hmmm...SEB's might better be avoided for the meantime [sad!]. For more facts on SWINE FLU, visit the following links: SCIENCEBASE L.A. TIMES _________________________

Sex Addict Ka Ba?

More from my blog .
